The following guideline outlines the management of burns and scalds in primary care. The management of large, full
thickness burns is beyond the scope of this guideline as these burns are more likely to be managed in secondary care. This guideline was developed by the New Zealand Guidelines Group (NZGG) in partnership with the Counties Manukau District Health Board.
What you will find in this guideline are sections such Initial assessment and management algorithm of burns and scalds (First aid, emergency examination and treatment, Burn assessment, Considerations for referral for hospital care, Referral criteria for regional burns unit care), Ongoing assessment and management algorithm of burns and scalds in primary care (Management of blisters and oedema, Pain management for adults and children, Signs of infection, Psychological consequences of burn injury).
You can also find assessment of burn size: Lund and Browder chart in relation to the percentage total body surface area burn. Further information about Primary Care Physician Guideline on Managing Burns and Scalds can be download here (source: acc.co.nz).
