Hypertensive emergency is characterized by a severe elevation in blood pressure (> 180/120 mm Hg) complicated by evidence of impending or progressive target organ dysfunction (coronary ischemia, disordered cerebral function, cerebrovascular events, pulmonary edema, and renal failure).
