In the role of acquired tubulointerstitial disease in the pathogenesis of salt dependent hypertension, it proposed that hypertension has hyperactive Symphatehetic Nervorum System (SNS) or Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) and an impaired ability of the kidney to excrete salt, NaCl.

The transition from SNS to the impaired ability of salt as a consequence of catecholamine induced elevations in blood pressure that preferentially damage regions of the juxtamedullary and medullary regions that do not autoregulate well to changes in renal perfusion pressure.
