A carbohydrate intolerance with onset during pregnancy known to be the Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).   Many studies associated the GDM with increased perinatal morbidity and very strong risk factor for the development of permanent diabetes later in life for the mother. A table summarizes the screening and diagnostic procedures for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is shown below as recommended by The Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS).

Indication Optimal Gestation for testing Test Diagnostic criteria – venous plasma glucose (mmol/L)
clinical suspicion of GDM any time 75g OGTT – Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (fasting) 0 hours >5.5, 2 hours >8.0 (Aus), 2 hours >9.0 (NZ)
Screening 26-28 weeks 50g glucose load (morning/non-fasting);
75g glucose load (morning/non-fasting)
1 hour >7.8; 1 hour >8.0;
Confirmation of diagnosis after a positive screening test 26-30 weeks 75g OGTT (fasting) 0 hours >5.5; 2 hours >8.0 (Aus); 2 hours >9.0
